Revamped TrueNAS R-series brings together storage and computing in a powerful hyperconverged appliance – Ars Technica

“Unpacking iXsystems’ Latest Release: A Look Into TrueNAS SCALE and Its Revolutionary Features”

Today, storage vendor iXsystems is unveiling their newest offering – the R-series hyperconverged infrastructure appliance, along with the alpha release of TrueNAS SCALE, a game-changing version of the TrueNAS storage distribution based on Debian Linux.

With four impressive rack-mounted models to choose from, including the expandable TrueNAS R10 and the massive TrueNAS R50, users can experience Ethernet connectivity up to dual 100GbE, optional Fibre Channel and Intel Xeon CPUs, and a variety of network sharing protocols like SMB, NFS, sFTP, and iSCSI.

But that’s not all – TrueNAS SCALE takes things to the next level with its focus on hyperconvergence and seamless integration with Docker-friendly Linux containers. Based on Debian Linux, it offers a more industry-standard approach to virtualization and expands its capabilities beyond just storage management.

Although the current alpha release only offers limited features such as Windows filesharing and integrated Linux KVM hypervisor, the beta release expected in December will introduce the innovative Kubernetes platform and the ability to manage and distribute containers across multiple SCALE appliances.

As we eagerly await the next release, we can’t help but be amazed by the potential of TrueNAS SCALE. Stay tuned for our in-depth review later this month.
