Unlocking the Power of TrueNAS: Improved Development and Enhanced Features

iXsystems, a leader in network access storage (NAS) solutions, has made significant improvements to their FreeBSD based operating systems, FreeNAS and TrueNAS. FreeNAS, the community supported version, has been merged with TrueNAS, the enterprise-grade version, resulting in one powerful operating system with enhanced features and improved development efficiency.

Prior to the merge, maintaining two separate projects was proving to be a challenge for the company. With two build processes, two QA processes, and two sets of documentation, development and software quality were being negatively impacted. iXsystems recognized the need for change and decided to merge the two operating systems.

The merge will result in a single binary with two versions, TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS Enterprise. TrueNAS CORE, previously known as FreeNAS, remains open-source and free to use without the need for license keys. TrueNAS Enterprise, on the other hand, offers extended features and requires a license key on supported platforms.

TrueNAS CORE, which stands for Community-supported, Open-source, Rapid development, and Early availability, is essentially the same as FreeNAS with a name change. The core functionalities and update processes remain the same, but development will now be faster and releases may happen more frequently (every 6 months compared to previous 9/12 months).

A preview of TrueNAS 12 will be available on March 11th with the official release to follow shortly after. Development progress can be followed in the forums. Along with the merge of FreeNAS and TrueNAS, TrueNAS 12 will bring improved support for AMD EPYC / Ryzen platforms, enhanced NUMA support for more efficient CPU core handling, and Open ZFS 2.0 support with dataset encryption, performance improvements, and compatibility with Linux ZFS pools.

Although a features matrix between TrueNAS CORE and Enterprise is not yet available, the announcement has sparked interest and many have requested such information. Stay tuned for future updates on this. Via Liliputing and Hacker News.
